Has this ever happened to you – your leaving your home and as you back down the driveway you hit the garage door remote and as you are just about to pull away you glance at your home and the garage door is still open. Thinking you may have not pressed the button all the way you hit the garage door remote again and nothing. Luckily you noticed your garage door was open stuck open before you left, not everyone does, but what do you do if your garage door won’t close?
Check Your Garage Door Sensors
When a garage door fails to close it is usually due to one of a couple of reasons. Probably the most common reason that garage doors fail to close is because of some obstruction of the safety sensors located on each side of the garage door opening. It’s easy to tell if the sensors are the problem as most garage door sensors have a small green or red light that is lit when the sensors are clear. If you cannot see the light then that is most likely your problem. Simply look for and move whatever is blocking the sensors (could be cobwebs on the sensor itself) or realign the sensors so that they are pointing at each other again (they can fall out of alignment for many reasons).
Is Your Garage Door Still On Track?
If you have determined that it is not the sensors you can test to see if the problem lies with your remote. Press the wall button to close the garage door, if it works then the batteries in your remote probably need changing. If it does not work then you can visually inspect the track of your garage door. Look for debris blocking the path or if your garage door has come off its track. Because of the extreme pressure that the garage door counter balance system is under you should not attempt to do any repairs yourself. Off-track doors can be very dangerous and should be repaired as soon as possible by a trained technician only!
